The Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) is a national-level entrance exam conducted annually by the Indian Maritime University for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate maritime programmes. It is the mandatory gateway for anyone seeking a career in the Merchant Navy through DG Shipping-approved courses.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for UG courses (B.Tech Marine Engineering, B.Sc Nautical Science, etc.), you must meet these standards:

  • Academic: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) at a minimum aggregate of 60%.
  • English: At least 50% marks in English in either Class 10 or Class 12.
  • Age Limit: As of 1 August 2026, the maximum age for General male candidates is 25 years, and for General female candidates, it is 27 years. Relaxations apply for reserved categories.
  • Medical Fitness: Candidates must be medically fit as per DG Shipping standards, including strict eyesight requirements (e.g., 6/6 vision for Nautical Science) and no colour blindness. 

     

Exam Pattern & Syllabus (UG)

The exam consists of six sections designed to test foundational knowledge:

  • Mathematics: 50 Questions (Class 11 & 12 level)
  • Physics: 50 Questions (Class 11 & 12 level)
  • Chemistry: 25 Questions (Class 11 & 12 level)
  • English: 25 Questions (Grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension)
  • General Aptitude: 25 Questions (Logic, reasoning, and quantitative aptitude)
  • General Knowledge: 25 Questions (Current affairs and basic GK) 

     

Marking Scheme: You receive +1 for every correct answer, while 0.25 marks are deducted for every incorrect response. 

 

Admission & Counselling

After the result is declared (typically in June), a Rank Certificate is issued. 

 

  1. IMU Campuses: Admission to campuses in Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam is done via online counselling.
  2. Affiliated Institutes: For private DGS-approved institutes (like Tolani Maritime Institute or Samundra Institute), you must still have an IMU CET rank to apply directly to them.
