About Architecture

Architecture course blends the art and science of designing, planning, and constructing buildings and various physical structures, focusing on aesthetics, functionality, sustainability, human behavior, and cultural relevance.

An architecture course typically covers a wide range of topics related to the design and construction of buildings and other physical structures. The career of an architect is dynamic and ever-changing. To pursue an architecture course in India, the candidate must have completed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. The candidate should have secured a minimum of 50% marks in their 10+2 or equivalent exam. Also, they should qualify for an entrance exam such as the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) or the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT). Some institutes may also consider the JEE Main score for admission. In some cases, colleges may also require candidates to have work experience or a portfolio to assess their aptitude.

Types of Architecture Courses

Diploma in Architecture

Diploma in Architecture is a basic program that deals with major subjects related to Architecture. After 12th students can either continue with a Diploma in Architecture or pursue a BArch course.

  • Architectural Diploma courses are three-year duration programs through which students can study all the basics of major subjects of Architecture.
  • Eligibility criteria to take up the Diploma courses is that students must have passed 10+2 or its equivalent with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks.
  • Some colleges admit students based on merit while some colleges conduct entrance exams
  • There are various specializations from which one can choose such as architectural assistantship, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, and more.

Undergraduate Architecture Courses

  • Undergraduate Architecture courses comprise of planning, designing, and construction and teach students everything they need to know to get into a professional career. Undergraduate programs teach everything from planning to construction.
  • The duration of a UG degree is 3 to 4 years. The applicants are required to pass 10+2 with an aggregate of 50% marks with PCM subjects. 
  • In some colleges, admission is based on merit, while in others, entrance exams like JEE, AIEEE, and NATA may be required. 
  • The top colleges offering these courses are IIT Kharagpur, Mumbai University, Aligarh Muslim University, National Institute of Technology, etc.
  • Following Undergraduate courses, students can pursue a Master's degree or obtain a job. The average salary of an architect with UG qualification is INR 3,00,000 to INR 5,00,000.

Postgraduate Architecture Courses

  • The postgraduate courses in Architecture are of two-year duration consisting of 4 semesters.
  • The courses deal with planning, designing, and constructing rural, towns, and urban communities. This is where students get to study field-relevant subjects.
  • The average salary of candidates with a master’s degree in Architecture ranges from INR 5,00,000 to INR 8,00,000.
  • Admission to these courses is based on merit in several colleges, whereas some colleges may require the candidates to appear for entrance exams such as JEE Advanced , TANCET, GATE etc.
