Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) is a 4-year undergraduate professional degree focused on the study of pharmaceutical science, medicine, and drug manufacturing. It is a foundational course for those who want to become registered pharmacists and work in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. 

 

Course Highlights

  • Duration: 4 years, divided into 8 semesters.
  • Eligibility: Completion of 10+2 (Science stream) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) or Mathematics (PCM). A minimum aggregate of 45–60% is typically required.
  • Lateral Entry: Students with a Diploma in Pharmacy (D. Pharm) can join directly in the 2nd year (3rd semester).
  • Approval: Ensure the college is approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) to practice as a registered pharmacist. 

     

Admission Process

Admissions are typically merit-based or through entrance examinations: 

 

  • Common Entrance Exams: NEET (not always mandatory), MHT CET, CUET, TS EAMCET, and BITSAT.
  • Process: Apply via college portals, clear the entrance exam (if required), participate in counselling, and verify documents. 

     

Curriculum & Core Subjects

The course blends theoretical classroom learning with intensive laboratory work and industrial training. 

 

  • First Year: Human Anatomy & Physiology, Pharmaceutical Analysis, and Inorganic Chemistry.
  • Core Subjects:
    • Pharmaceutics: Formulation and manufacturing of drugs.
    • Pharmacology: Study of drug actions and effects on the body.
    • Medicinal Chemistry: Design and synthesis of new drug molecules.
    • Pharmacognosy: Study of medicines from natural sources like plants. 

       

Career Opportunities & Scope

The pharmaceutical industry is often considered "recession-proof" due to the constant demand for medicine. 

 

  • Job Roles:
    • Registered Pharmacist: Working in retail or hospital pharmacies.
    • Drug Inspector: Ensuring safety and quality standards (government role).
    • Medical Representative: Promoting products to doctors and clinics.
    • Quality Control/Assurance: Testing drug purity and manufacturing safety.

  • Salary: Fresh graduates typically earn between ₹2.5 LPA to ₹6 LPA. Experienced professionals in senior or government roles can earn up to ₹10–20 LPA.
