The BA LLB (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Legislative Law) is a five-year integrated undergraduate dual-degree program in India that combines the study of arts/humanities with professional legal education. It is specifically designed for students to begin their legal studies directly after completing Class 12, saving them one year compared to pursuing separate BA and LLB degrees. 

 

Course Overview & Eligibility

  • Duration: 5 years, typically divided into 10 semesters.
  • Eligibility: Completion of 10+2 from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate score, usually ranging from 45% to 60% depending on the institution.
  • Streams: Open to students from all academic backgrounds (Arts, Science, or Commerce).
  • Age Limit: Generally, there is no upper age limit for admission according to Bar Council of India (BCI) guidelines, though some individual colleges may have their own criteria. 

     

Admission Process & Entrance Exams

Admissions are primarily merit-based, determined through national, state, or university-level entrance examinations: 

 

  • CLAT (Common Law Admission Test): The primary exam for admission to 24 National Law Universities (NLUs) and many private institutions.
  • AILET (All India Law Entrance Test): Specifically for admission to National Law University, Delhi.
  • Other Exams: Includes LSAT-IndiaMH CET Law (Maharashtra), CUET (Central Universities), and individual university tests like the BET (Brainware Entrance Test).
  • Prep Resources: Study guides like the Arihant LLB Entrance Exam Solved Papers or specialized online courses are often used for preparation. 

     

Curriculum & Subjects

The syllabus balances humanities and law to provide a holistic understanding of how the legal system interacts with society. 

 

  • Humanities (Initial Years): Political Science, Sociology, History, Economics, and English.
  • Core Law (Later Years): Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Contract Law, Property Law, Administrative Law, and Tort Law.
  • Practical Training: Includes mandatory internships, moot court exercises, legal drafting training, and legal aid camps. 

     

Career Prospects & Salary

Graduates must pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) and register with a State Bar Council to practice law in Indian courts. 

 

  • Common Job Profiles: Lawyer/Advocate, Corporate Lawyer, Legal Advisor, Public Prosecutor, and Legal Analyst.
  • Diverse Avenues: Beyond litigation, graduates find roles in the judiciary (as judges), civil services (IAS/IPS), NGOs, academia, and international organisations.
  • Salary Expectations:
    • Entry-Level: Typically between ₹3–8 Lakhs Per Annum (LPA).
    • Corporate Roles: In top-tier firms, starting packages for premier NLU graduates can range from ₹15–22 LPA.
    • Senior Positions: Experienced legal heads or senior advocates can earn ₹20–30+ LPA.

Fees vary widely based on the type of institution: 

 

  • Government Colleges: ₹10,000 – ₹2,00,000 per year.
  • Private/NLUs: ₹1,50,000 – ₹5,00,000+ per year.
    Programs like the LPU Integrated BA-LLB (Hons.) or courses at SGT University typically range from ₹1.4 to ₹1.6 Lakhs annually.
